Language & Courses
Language Requirement
Graduate Students:
- No English Language Proficiency Test is required.
- However, students must have sufficient English proficiency for communication, lectures, and lab work.
- Japanese Language Proficiency Test N1 (JLPT N1) is required, as most courses are taught in Japanese.
- Undergraduate students cannot enroll in graduate-level courses under any circumstances.
- If you don't have JLPT N1, consider postponing your study abroad until the Master's level.
Course Restrictions
Review the following guidelines before selecting your courses.
Course Selection Process
- Submit tentative course selections during the application process.
- Finalize your courses within the first two weeks of the semester.
- For Visa Requirement:
You must register for at least 10 hours of class or lab work per week (approximately 6 courses) throughout the exchange.
Eligible Courses
Graduate Students:You may only take graduate courses from:
- School of Engineering (course codes starting with 37-)
- Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (course codes starting with 48-)
You may only take 3rd- and 4th-year undergraduate courses from:
- Faculty of Engineering (course codes starting with FEN-)
Transcripts & Credit Transfer
- Your transcript will be emailed to your home university in late March or late September.
- For credit transfer, consult your home university.
- UTokyo Master's Program Requirements:
Requires 30 credits and completion of a thesis within 2 years. - Credit Assessment System at UTokyo
Lecture Courses: 15 hours = 1 credit
Seminars: 30 hours = 1 credit
Additional Notes:
- Refer to the Lectures in English list and the course catalogue for available courses.
- Japanese Language Classes and UTokyo-SNU Remote Lectures are available.
- You may take only one class per period at UTokyo.
- For class inquiries, speak to the instructor in person at the beginning of the class.
