Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) for Visa Applications
★If you are going to come with a Japanese passport, you do not need to prepare this document.
★If you are applying first through "University-wide Student Exchange Programs (USTEP)", you do not need to prepare this document on T-cens system.
In order to apply for a student visa in your own country, you need a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE). It is our job to apply for a CoE for you here in Japan, and send it to your home university. For the CoE application, you need to prepare adequate financial documents for your situation. Please read the requirements below carefully to see which documents you need to prepare.

Case A: Scholarships sponsored by your home country, your university and/or a scholarship foundation
Please make sure that the information below is included in the document.
- Name of the funding source
- Postal address and a contact person for the funding source
- Applicant's status with this funding source
- Terms and conditions of the scholarship
- Full or partial scholarship
- Scholarship period
- Scholarship value per month
Case B: If you are going to pay your own expenses by yourself
Certified Bank Statement of your bank account under your own name
- The bank statement for an account in your own name must clearly state that sufficient funds for educational and living expenses required to study in Japan are deposited in your bank account. The balance must be equivalent to at least \130,000 for each month of study in Japan.
- The certificate must be written in English on the bank's letter-headed paper, with an official stamp of the bank. (*If you cannot get an English document, translation can be done by yourself and attached.)
- The certificate must be issued within a month of your postal submission, and the date of issue should be clearly stated.
Case C: If a person other than the applicant, such as a family member, is paying the applicant's expenses
C-1: Certified Bank Statement under your sponsor's name
- The bank statement for your sponsor's account under his/her name must clearly state that sufficient funds for educational and living expenses as required to study in Japan are deposited in his/her bank account. The balance must be equivalent to at least \130,000 for each month of study in Japan.
- The certificate must be written in English on the bank's letter-headed paper, with an official stamp of the bank. (*If you cannot get an English document, translation can be done by yourself and attached.)
- The certificate must be issued within a month of your postal submission, and the date of issue should be clearly stated.
C-2: Affidavit of Financial Support
- Download the Letter of Financial Guarantee in STEP 2 on the T-cens Online Application System. This is a letter affirming that your sponsor will make the payments on your behalf.
C-3: Official document certifying sponsor's relationship to you (Only applies to Chinese citizens excluding Taiwanese)
- The original copy of an official "Notarial Certificate of Relationship" issued by the government must be submitted.

- All documents must be written or translated into English. (*Translation can be done by yourself.)
- Documents submitted to the Tokyo Immigration Office in connection with the application procedures will not be returned under any circumstances.
