Language & Courses

Language Requirement

No English language test required. Proficiency assumed for communication, lecture courses, and lab work in English. However, undergraduates must have JLPT1 or equivalent for most Japanese-taught courses.

Important Note for Undergraduate Students:
Undergraduate students cannot enroll in Graduate level courses under any circumstances. If you find limited options for Undergraduate level courses due to language proficiency, we recommend postponing your study abroad until you reach the Master's level.

Course Restrictions

Refer below and submit tentative courses during application. Finalize within the first two weeks of semester. For visa requirement, 10 hrs. of class or lab work per week is required (equivalent to about 6 courses).

  • Graduate Students:
    Limited to graduate courses from "School of Engineering" (37-) AND "Graduate School of Information Science and Technology" (48-).

  • Undergraduate Students:
    Limited to 3rd and 4th-year undergraduate courses from "Faculty of Engineering" (FEN-).
Additional Notes:
  • Check Lectures in English and the course catalogue
  • Japanese Language Classes and UTokyo-SNU Remote Lectures available.
  • Max one class per period at UTokyo.
  • For class inquiries, ask instructors in person at the beginning of the class.
  • Transcript sent to home university via email at the end of the exchange (April/October).
  • For credit transfer, contact your home university.Master's students at UTokyo need 30 credits and complete a thesis within 2 years.

    The general credit assessment system at UTokyo:
    For the lecture: 15 hours = 1 credit
