Application
Eligibility
1. Must be a full-time student nominated by a partner university throughout the exchange period.
2. Education Requirements:
- Undergraduate level:At least 14 years of education, including the first 2 years of undergraduate studies.
- Graduate level: At least 16 years of education, including a Bachelor's degree.
3. Language Proficiency (Undergraduates):
- Sufficient Japanese language skills required(JLPT1).
Requirements
- Host faculty:
To join us, you must find and get acceptance from a host faculty via T-cens within the application period. See Schedule and Supervising professor. - Exchange period:
Be physically present in Japan throughout the program, from the beginning of the semester to the exam end. See the Academic Calendar - Course & Language:
For visa requirement, 10 hrs. of class or lab work per week is required. Follow the course restrictions. For credit transfers, contact your home university in advance. Undergraduate students must meet Japanese language proficiency requirements to participate. - Student Visa:
Obtain a Student Visa before entering Japan. Follow the CoE Application process. Once the CoE get issued by immigration in March/September, apply for the visa at your local Japanese embassy. After completing your exams or research, please return home promptly, as the visa will become invalid. - Medical:
Maintain good health and have a free on-campus medical check-up after enrollment. Contact us for any physical health concerns. See Medical Service - Application:
Submit all applications through the "T-cens Online Application System. See Application Tips
Required documents
To join our exchange program, approval from a host supervisor is required. Start with Step 1: Upload documents and submit your request to the host via T-cens (see Supervising Professor, Application tip).
All documents MUST be in English/Japanese. If not, attach the translation (can be done by yourself).
STEP 1
1. ID photo:
Within 3 months, no background, no smile/teeth, and different from passport photo.
Follow photo requirements by immigration.
2. Nomination Letter:
Must be issued by home university, confirming your nomination for EAP program.
3. Undergraduate Transcript:
Must show all grades and credits taken during the program and its grading system.
4. Graduate Transcript:
Must show all grades and credits taken during the program and its grading system.
5. Recommendation Letter:
Must be written on A4-sized letterhead in a free format and signed by one of below.
(president, dean, department chair, supervisor or a faculty member of home university)
6. AFEB form:
Upload AFEB form in PDF and meet education requirements:
- 16 years for Graduate exchange
- 14 years (including 2 years Undergraduate) for Undergraduate exchange
7. Approval Letter (if applicable):
Upload the host supervisor letter/email ONLY if you already have approval before applying via T-cens (See SUPERVISING PROFESSOR - YES! )
8. JLPT Certificate (for undergraduate):
Please note that most of Undergraduate level classes are taught in Japanese and Undergraduate level students are NOT allowed to take any Graduate level classes. Therefore, Undergraduate level students must have a sufficient level of Japanese language which is JLPT 1-level.
If you already have a certificate, please upload it on the T-cens Online Application System. If you do not have this certificate, please clearly state that you do have the equivalent level of Japanese language skill on Certificate of Japanese Proficiency. In this case, the Japanese proficiency certificate must be filled in and signed by an instructor of Japanese language or another appropriately qualified person.
STEP 2
1. Name in Katakana:

2. Passport:
i.e. CHAPLIN, Charles →チャップリン チャールズ (Ref: Google Translate)
Must be valid until the end of your exchange
If not available, upload other ID and have your passport by the time of visa application
STEP 3
1. CoE application documents
Upload within two weeks once we notify you
2. OSTA application number
Update once you apply for UTokyo housing (see Housing application`s schedule)
