Online Application for Exchange Student Program under Agreement with Partner Universities (EAP program)

Important Facts that Applicants Need to Know

Everyone is Required to Belong to a Lab and Conduct Research

The University of Tokyo, as the top university in Japan, has a research-oriented culture. Therefore, it is in competition with other top universities around the world as a research-oriented university.

At the School of Engineering and Faculty of Engineering, all students, including UNDERGRADUATE students, must belong to a laboratory under a supervising professor and spend substantial time on research. Therefore, by providing various kinds of lab programs with a rich research environment and high quality facilities, students are afforded abundant opportunities to cultivate their creativity.

Keeping this in mind, we are organized so that all exchange students also belong to a lab and experience this culture. Therefore, we expect all exchange students to actively conduct research in the lab to which they are attached.

It is very important for applicants to have a clear idea of their research theme and to know which lab they want to belong to before they start applying for the exchange program in order that they may have a productive and fulfilling study period during their exchange. We look forward to receiving prepared and enthusiastic students through our exchange program.

You Must Obtain a Student Visa before Entering Japan

Immigration to Japan has recently become stricter. Therefore, you must apply for and receive your Student Visa before you come to Japan. Accordingly, please do not leave your country until you have received your CoE (which is the document you need for your visa application), applied for your visa, and received it in your passport.

*The Immigration Office have warned us that if you come to Japan prematurely and try to change your visa status after arriving here in Japan, the Immigration Office might send you back to your home country to apply for your visa. Therefore, please do not plan your trip until you actually have your Student Visa in your passport in your own country.

Health Check

The School of Engineering does not require you to submit to a Health Check, but needs all applicants to realize the importance of maintaining good health while studying at the University of Tokyo.

Therefore, since the University of Tokyo provides you with an opportunity for a physical and medical check-up after enrolment every April and October, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and be responsible for your physical health.

If there are any physical health matters you need to discuss with us, please feel free to contact us by e-mail.
